Talking Point # 5 In Service of What?

I very much like the idea of a service learning project.  I believe that by incorporating education and helping people that are in need is a great collaboration. Whether is be tutoring, volunteering in a classroom as we are doing right now, donating to charity etc. I believe that this is a great thing and it should keep going on.  I think that by people helping others that are in need is a great thing to do.  The person helping out has to want to do it though, otherwise it defeats the whole purpose of the project.  For example if we went into the classrooms that we are volunteering in with a miserable attitude and acted like we did not want to be there it would not help the students out at all it would make them feel bad make them feel negative as well.  But, if we go in there with a positive attitude willing to help and eager to be there they will feel the same way because they see that we are happy and want to be there.  As said in the reading "Moral domain: giving and caring."  I think that is a very nice way of putting it.

"Educators who emphasize change would clearly also value the educational benefits of this approach."

Talking point # 4

I thought this was an interesting reading because I do agree that at a young age racism is introduced through the cartoons that we watch and the stories that we hear. Especially through Disney, as a child I always wanted to be the Little Mermaid the beautiful princess that lived in the sea and met her prince charming.  I am sure that a majority of little girls feel this way.  All the Disney princesses are all of different cultures.. that way that they apply to all different little girls around the world.

"Industrially produced fiction has become one of the primary shapers of our emotions and our intellect... Although these stories are supposed to entertain us, they constantly give us a secret education."

This quote is sadly true.  As an adult now that I watch all the Disney movies, cartoons and such that I used to watch as a child I get an entirely different meaning than I did as a child. When you really look at the meanings of some of these movies it is  formualting a child's thinking process to believe in a stereotypical fantasy world.

"The young pretty ones only want to hook their manthe old; pretty ones are mean because they are losing their looks."

This quote drew my attention because the characters in Disney movies are really portayed in this fashion! This is sending young girls a message that the only thing that matters is your looks and getting a man that you will rely on for everything.  This shows that in society men is the dominant race because women are they to wait for them and be pretty for them and that is all... in most cases this is not true but children see this in childrens Disney movies so what else are they supposed to think?

"Women who aren't white are beginning to feel left out and ugly because they never get to play a princess."

This is sad that several women felt this way.  But, with time when SOME racism diminshed they created princesses of different races like Pochahantas, Jasmine and Mulan.  Which is nice that they did that but in the past it made it seem like the only pretty women were white, which is not right.

Talking point #3

Before reading this article I thought that talking to children at the elementary school age about gayness was too young, but now when I think about it, it is better to introduce them at a young age.  If you wait until a child is older to discuss something like this it is going to result in them not knowing how to feel about the topic.  If you discuss it with them when they are younger they will more than likely be more accepting and less judgemental about it because it was introduced to them earlier in life.  Just like children that I taught a second language at a younger age, when they are older they are more accepting of other cultures, because it was introduced to them earlier in life.

1) "To the extent that gayness is recognized in the curriculum, it is likely to be in the health curriculum, which it is associated with disease."

This is not right at all.  Especially because they only associate gayness with disease.  But, they do not assocaite heterosexual sex/ realtionships with disease even though there are several sexually transmitted disease transmitted from males to females and the other way around.  It is crazy that this is the only way that they talk about gayness with kids, no wonder why people grow up to be so against gayness, the only thing that they learn about is that it can result in disease.  They are not taught that people are in love with each other (even though they are the same gender) they still love each other, it is something that they can not control that is the way they are and they should be accepted and respected for that.

2) "Dismissed as adolescent behavior screams of Faggot echo down the hall terrifying, stigmatizing, isolating"

This just makes you think...can you imagine being treated this way because you are different than the majority of people around you?  This most likely would not happen as often if children were taught about gayness earlier in life.  BEcause they are not taught about it when they are first introduced to it at the middle school age they automatically ar unaccepting of it because people disagree with what they are unfamiliar with, especially at the middle school age because of the raging hormones and changes that they are going through, they do not like what they are not familiar with and they follow what the people around think and do.  But, if this topic was brought up to them when they were younger once they reached the middle school age more people would be accepting of gayness ( not all because lets face it not all people are accepting of everything) but it definatley will help a majority of people to be less judgemental

3) "Silence = Death"

I thought this was interesting because I had never heard this before.  I believe it means that if you are gay and do not care that keeping it to yourself (being silent) will be the death of you.  Which makes sense how can you deny who you really are to everyone around you, that would eat you apart.  People should feel confident about who they are and what they like, they should not be petrified to open up about it.  I can not imagine what it would be like to not feel comfortable opening up at all.  I mean I have insecurities about myself, everyone does  but not like that.  If the world were more accepting than people would be more accepting of themselves.  Well that is how I feel

Talking Point #2

This article is the story of a man who spoke Spanish as his native language.  His family was from Mexico and they were living in California.  It was very difficult for him to communicate with people because he only spoke a few words here and there in English so he had a very difficult time forming sentences and complete thoughts so when he did try and speak to people they just looked at him word because they did not understand him.  I can not even imagine how this feels because obviously I have never been in this experience.  Especially at such a young age.  At age 5 you still are learning to form sentences adequatley in your dominant language never mind learning a new language and trying to make sense of it.

He was very happy at home but in public where people were speaking English all around him, it scared him.  When his parents spoke in English it scared him too.  He did not feel comfortable unless he was at home with his family speaking Spanish.  It must have been extremely difficult living under those conditions.  I now have more empathy for those people that.  The people who do not speak the same language as all the people around them. All that must be going through their head is.... are they talking about me? am I doing everything alright? Constantly questioning themselves.  I would not want to live like that.

"Is it possible for you and your husband to encourage your children to practice English at home?"
I dont know why but this part of the reading stuck out in my head.  The author kept saying that the only place that he felt safe was at home with his parents speaking Spanish.  And now they were to practice English at home....where is he to feel safe?  This is what I thought at first but, then I thought about it. There is nowhere else better for him to practice something that made him feel uncomfortable than the place he felt the most safe and with the people he felt the most comfortable with.

"At last at seven years old, I came to believe what had been technically true sine my birth: I was an American citizen."
Even though he was born an American citizen he did not feel as though he was one until he fluently spoke the language.  He did not feel like he was a citizen because people did not treat him like one because he did not speak the same language as them, have the same appearance as them, the same lifestyle etc.  It took him the first seven years of his life to actually feel like he belonged.  This is crazy to me.

"My mother, my father... after English became my primary language I no longer knew what words to use in addressing my parents."

He tried so hard to fit in and feel welcome in America by becoming fluent in their language that he had a hard time remembering his own language.  He was forgetting his native language to fit in and feel welcome in America. This is very interesting because you never think about things like this.

talking point #1

This article was interstiting to me here are some of the quotes that caught my attention....

"In 1991 84 people more than half of whom were 21 or younger were murder in the percent a year later 10 were shot dead on a street"

This is very scary especially since the place that they are talkin about is just hours away from where we live.

"mother sent him to the store to get pizza. 3 slices- one for mother, one for father and one for me... saw a homeless man who told him he was hungry. But he was too cold to move his mouth he  pointed to the pizza so I gave him some.  Were your parents mad at you? Why would they be? God tols us to share"

I like this quote because this boy and his family are struggling to get by an he still is willing to give to someone less fortuante than him.  There are people in the world who have everything they need and way more and they will not help out those in need at all.
